European countries reopen their borders, what about events?

Today, many European countries are reopening their borders to most other Europeans. Travelling to, for example, Switzerland, Germany and France is again possible for most Europeans. A trip to the Alps, the Pyrenees or the Dolomites seems possible again. What about the events? In our calendar many events in June and early July are still 'cancelled', but many events that are organized later still assume that they can continue.

Rules vary greatly from country to country

What are the rules regarding events in the popular cycling countries?

  • In Switzerland, events for up to 300 people are possible from 6 June. From June 22nd, events up to 1000 people are allowed.
  • France: Large events (>5000 people) may only be possible in September, but smaller events are already allowed from mid-July.
  • In Italy, they are, understandably, careful. From mid-June smaller events are allowed, but only if a 1.5 meter distance can be kept. Gran fondo's or sportives are not allowed for the time being.
  • In Spain the measures vary per region. Events are indeed allowed in some parts. You can find the regulations here. Important: keeping at least 1,5m distance if mandatory.
  • Austria: from 1 July, outdoor events are allowed again, up to 500 people. From 1 August possibly for 1250 persons.
  • In Germany, there are large differences between the federal states. Very large events are temporarily banned throughout Germany. But in some states, events up to 150, 250 or even 500 participants are possible again under certain conditions. You can find the exact regulations for each federal state here (German).
  • Belgium. Indoor and outdoor events up to 200 people are allowed. From the 1st of July, outdoor events up to 400 people are allowed. If the corona number stay on the same level, this number might be increased to 800 people by August 1.
  • The Netherlands: from the 1st of July, events are allowed again. There's no maximum number of people but contenders to keep 1,5m of distance.

Event organizers do their utmost to make their event take place. Earlier we published a list of 20 events that are still planned. Many events, such as La Marmotte, have been moved to September. In any case, we are positive and are taking a gran fondo season into account. Take a look at the possibilities in our calendar.
