5 reasons why you'll fall in love with Asturias during the Vuelta

You won't have missed it: the Vuelta starts on Friday! The Vuelta is a must-see event for viewers, with some of the most beautiful scenery in Spain. And the most beautiful region of all? That's undoubtedly Asturias. In stage 8 and 9 the peloton will visit this beautiful region. We would like to introduce this cycling region to you.

Where is Asturias?

This region is located in the north of Spain, between Galicia and Cantabria. Its capital is Oviedo and its largest city is Gijon, which is about 175 km west of Santander.

5 reasons to go to Asturias for a bike trip

1. Picos de Europa

First and foremost, the best reason to visit the area is because of its stunning natural beauty. The Picos de Europa is a mountain range known as a mix between the Pyrenees and the Dolomites. Unspoiled, quiet, largely undiscovered and above all, wonderfully beautiful. Every year the Vuelta passes by and you'll hear many a cyclist say: "What a great area, I want to ride there too."

You'll find climbs of every caliber. The most famous makes many a cyclist tremble: the dreaded Alto de Angliru, the toughest climbs in professional cycling. Another great challenge is Lagos de Covadonga. Possibly the most beautiful climb in Spain. The Vuelta has been here 22 times since 1983.

The Picos de Europa lend themselves perfectly to cycling, but of course there are excellent opportunities for other mountain sports, including hiking.

2. Mountains and coast

Unique about Asturias is that you have both high mountains and a beautiful coastline, packed with beaches. Cycling in the mountains in the morning and lying on the beach in the afternoon: Asturias is one of the few places in Europe where it's possible. September or early October is still a good time to do so.

3. Excellent MTB opportunities

Not only on the road bike you can indulge in the mountains or along the coast. Asturias is also an excellent place to explore on MTB. Asturias is blessed with one of the wildest landscapes in the world. The possibilities for mountain bikers are virtually endless.

4. An amazing cuisine

In Asturias you can eat fantastic food. In addition to typical Spanish dishes, you'll find countless local specialties.

5. Beautiful cities

If you like to visit a city in addition to cycling then you will not be disappointed. With Oviedo and Gijon, Asturias has two strong assets. And of course there are numerous smaller towns and villages if that appeals more to you. For example, the beautiful and charming harbour towns of Ribadesella, Tazones, Llanes and Cudillero.
