In Bolzano there’s so much to see, experience and taste… Welcome!

Cycling paradise in the heart of the Dolomites

A unique city, Bolzano is known for its numerous events. We hope you will have a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable stay in the city. Discover for yourself the sunlit arches, the shiny roof tiles of the cathedral, the scent of smoked sausages that blows over from the shops, and the babble of voices in the piazza while you have an aperitif there...

The Dolomites

UNESCO world heritage site

The beauty of the Dolomites cannot be described in words – it has to be experienced. A leisurely hike or a challenging Alpine tour will reveal the “Pale Mountains” in close-up: a keen eye might perhaps reveal a small fossil, a relic of the time when today's mountain peaks were part of a large tropical sea.

It's the world's most impressive cycling area. Bolzano is the one of the best places to discover the mountains by bike or by foot.  Spend time on active life and enjoy the best Italian kitchen. Here you find a combination of city life and mountains.

Cuisine of Bolzano and South Tyrol

A great place for gourmets

Characterized by different flavours. On one hand there is a solid genuine country cooking, on the other there are the specialties of the Mediterranean gastronomic tradition. The same often includes spaghetti (Italian pasta) and Knödel (bread dumblings), ossobuco (marrow-bone) and Gröstl (beef cooked in a saucepan with potatoes and onions).

Giro delle Dolomiti

6 days cycling and leisure in the stunning Dolomites

Born in 1955 but having elapsed a few years back in the 70s, the Giro delle Dolomiti is the oldest weeklong event for amateurs we know of. This year we will have a total of 10 timed stretches, a totally new route in the Brenta Dolomites next to the Lake of Garda, we will do some same routes as the Giro d’Italia, launch a few new climbs, add to an already unique combination of timed and controlled speed sections even more fun. See for yourself!

The Dolomites and Bolzano

The most beautiful cycling area in the world

The Dolomites are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. And with good reason. The typical sharp edges of the mountains give you the feeling of cycling in paradise. Most of the mountain passes are above 2000 metres and are situated on a small area. You will find a variety of easy and difficult climbs. Without any problems you can make a beautiful loop with several mountain passes.

Passes and routes inspiration: Sella loop, Passo Nigra, Passo Costalunga, Seiser Alm, Passo Lavazé, Passo Pampeago, Passo Mendola, Passo delle Palade, Passo Fedaia and many others.

Routes

Bolzano is the perfect base for cycling in the Dolomites. One week is too short to discover all mountain passes and loops. In Komoot you find dozens of routes. You will always find many that fit you.

Cycling in the Dolomites: 5 important tips

  1. There are lots of tunnels. Use a (small) light to be visible.
  2. The mountain passes are above 2,000 meters and can be cold. Always take a raincoat or windstopper with you. Also when it's hot in the valley.
  3. In the Summer there is a lot of car traffic in the Dolomites. Be prepared.
  4. Some mountain passes are closed for traffic from 10:00-16:00. Figure out where and benefit.
  5. Some mountain passes are easy to ride, some are extremely hard. Bring the right gearing!

Mountain biking

South Tyrol boasts trails and tours at all altitudes making it an ideal MTB destination from March to late autumn. Cyclists of all ages can explore the over 2,000 km of reinforced mountain bike trails at various degrees of difficulty. Amidst stunning mountain scenery, enjoy the comprehensive network of tours, bike schools and bike parks from the Vinschgau valley to the Dolomites. South Tyrol has something for every cyclist!

Gravel

Around Bolzano you can certainly find the necessary gravel roads, if you know where to look! The flattest routes you will find to the northwest. If you go one of the other directions, you shouldn't be afraid of climbing. Take a light gear, wide tires and keep in mind you'll have to hike a bike sometimes.

In our collection on Komoot we have already collected a few nice routes for you.
