Just 4 hours from Amsterdam, you' ll find the island of Gran Canaria. Together with Tenerife, it's destination that hugely popular amongst cyclists. And with good reason, because on the Canary Islands, the weather's good pretty much year round. It doesn't get much colder than 20 degrees. And even if you're not riding, there are plenty of things to do.
The climate on the canary islands is quite unique. On the south side, it's very dry and warm year round, whilst on the north side, it rains more often. Temperatures below 20 are rare, no matter what time of year to go. If you're looking to ride a week in the sun, Canaria is a good destination all year round. It can be hot in the summer, but it's never too extreme. October and November are the most rainy months. But even then, most of the days, the sun will be out.
On the south side of the island several seaside resorts can be found. Maspalomas is probably the largest and most well-known. This town consists of multiple neighbourhoods, each with their own character. Playa del Ingles is the oldest one. Close to the coast, one can find Meloneras, which is the the newest and most luxurious area. Here you find nice shops, good restaurants and high end hotels. On the south side there are more villages, such as Puerto Rico, Puerto de Mogán and Tauro. For cyclists, Maspalomas is however the best place to be, because it's located on an intersection. This means you have 3 roads to start or begin your ride with.
Gran Canaria has several hotels that focus specifically on cyclists. Things like a bike shed, special meals, laundry service are mostly standard. Obviously, you're more than welcome to bring your family as well.
