Only a few hours by plane

Just 4 hours from Amsterdam, you' ll find the island of Tenerife. Together with Gran Canaria, it's a destination that's hugely popular amongst cyclists. And with good reason, because on the Canary Islands, the weather's good pretty much year round. It doesn't get much colder than 20 degrees. And even if you're not riding, there are plenty of things to do.

Unique weather system

The climate on the Canary Islands is quite unique. On the south side, it's very dry and warm year round, whilst on the north side, it rains more often. Temperatures below 20 are rare, no matter what time of year to go. If you're looking to ride a week in the sun, Tenerife is a good destination all year round. It can be hot in the summer, but it's never too extreme. October and November are the most rainy months. But even then, most of the days, the sun will be out.

Where to go

On the south side of the island several seaside resorts can be found, such as Costa Adeje, Garachico, Playa Paraíso and Los Christianos. All of them are excellent as a base for cycling.

El Teide

One of the most challenging climbs in Europe

It's one of the longest climbs in Europe. Depending on which side you're riding, riding to the top involves between 43 and 52 km of climbing. The top lies at 2324 meters, and because you're starting at sea level, you'll have to conquer roughly the same elevation.  When climbing, you can expect great views and perfect road quality. This one is not for the faint hearted. It's a must do, one that every riders wants on his of her palmares.

What cycling clothes do I need?

In the summer you won't need anything else but your summer apparel. In spring and fall, a set of arm warmers and a wind jacket or gilet can come in handy. Tenerife is famous for 4 seasons in one day. The temperature on the summit is about 12 degrees lower than at the coast. Having said that, when it's sunny it's usually far from cold, even in the winter. In the winter, it's important to read the weather. Don't to all the way to the top when it's in the clouds. There's much more interesting stuff besides the top :)
