There is always one weekend in the summer that is packed with great events. For 2022 that is undoubtedly the weekend of 3 and 4 July. We list no less than 10 gems, but we could easily have made a Top 25 of them as well.
Serious MTB marathon in Drenthe, in the north of The Netherlands. The name suggests that Bart Brentjens is involved, but nothing could be further from the truth. The name is derived from the starting place, the Landal park 'Het land van Bartje'. What can you expect? Forests, moors and nature reserves. And lots of beautiful single tracks. No climbing, obviously so 200 km might sound harder than it actually is.
The MTB version of the famous stage race TOUR Transalp. 7 stages, 566 km with a total of more than 18,000 meters of climbing. This is serious stuff, only suitable for the experienced MTB rider. The start is in Lienz and the finish in Riva del Garda, Italy. Fun news: CycloWorld will be raffling off starting tickets next spring.
Fairy-tale beautiful Swiss gran fondo. How about Forcola, Bernina, Fluëla and Albulapass (see photo)? The longest distance has 211 km with 3827m+. Of course there is also a shorter distance, although you miss the last two climbs. Excellent organization.
The world's most famous gran fondo needs little introduction. Four appealing cols, 174 km and 5000m+. Also this year with an ultra fondo, where Alpe d'Huez has to be climbed 2x.
Italy's most beautiful. Every year good for a massive interest, and not without reason. 138 km, 4000m+. The Sella round, completed with the Giau and Valpora. You can't get more beautiful than this. This gran fondo requires a draw and for 2022 has already been, but for those who want to participate there is still an escape: on March 23, 194 tickets for charity will be sold.
Cool event in and around metropolis Berlin. Start and finish are a stone's throw from the Brandenburg Gate. The route consists of a round of 60 kilometers that is run once or twice. There are various rankings and it is also possible to participate in teams.
Popular Austrian fondo in Tyrol and southern Germany. The longest distance is 218 kilometers with 3500m+, but there are also several shorter distances. The event is very well organized. A great way to discover this beautiful cycling area.
Wonderful gran fondo in the Pyrenees with a different start place and course each year. In 2022 the start will be in Argelès-Gazost and the finish in Hautacam. Although the exact route has not been announced yet, you can count on a ride of 150 to 200 kilometers with 4000 to 5000 meter of climbing. There are also always shorter distances.
Sympathetic and well-organized small-scale event in the mountainous center of Portugal. The event has two variants, the granfondo has 174 km and 4600m+ the medio 97 with 2700m+. Unique is that you get above 2000 meters, which is not very common in Portugal. If you want to get in the mood, check out this trailer from 2018.
Andorra is on the rise as a cycling destination, partly because it is home to so many pros like Robert Gesink and Primoz Roglic. This gran fondo is the perfect way to get to know the country better. You can choose from no less than 5 routes, ranging from 1 climb to 5. The longest distance has 154 km with 4400m+. With about 1000 participants it is a relatively small event.
