The world of gran fondos is known for its famous events and massive crowds, but smaller, lesser-known rides often have surprising advantages. This year, I decided to stay closer to home (I live near Geneva) and explore a few of these smaller French gran fondos in the Jura.
The experience turned out to be a gem, with unique routes, a relaxed atmosphere, and stunning landscapes. These events may not attract the entire European cycling scene, but they have their own charm and benefits, which I value just as much as the larger events. Here are five reasons why I’m so excited about these hidden gems and why they’re definitely on my calendar for next year.
Entry fees for these smaller gran fondos are reasonable, averaging around €50. This often includes nice extras, such as a shirt (if you register in time at the Transju and La Bisou), a medal, rankings, an awards ceremony, and a welcoming pasta party. A full experience for a fair price.
These smaller events rarely sell out, allowing you to register last minute—sometimes even on the day itself. This flexibility makes it easy to participate spontaneously without worrying
The starts of these gran fondos feel relaxed, without the hustle and bustle of massive events. There’s also no stress at the feed stations, allowing you to recharge in peace before the next section.
Finding affordable accommodations nearby is easy and usually inexpensive. This makes it convenient and budget-friendly to stay overnight and explore the area without high costs.
These gran fondos offer a chance to explore cols and routes you might otherwise never encounter. The landscapes in the Jura are breathtakingly beautiful, making for an unforgettable day away from the usual routes. Many of these events, such as La Vache Qui Rit and La Transju'Cyclo, are part of the Trophée Label d'Or—a French series that includes 18 unique gran fondos. This adds a touch of competition without the intensity of large international events.
In short, these smaller French events have a unique charm and come with many advantages! I’m already looking forward to participating again in 2025.
