Looking back on a great weekend

Af the start of this year, many events were cancelled and a large number of organizers decided to look for a backup after the summer. The weekend of September 11 and 12 proved popular.

It was a packed weekend with finger-licking goodness. We give a brief impression, perhaps it is a nice inspiration for 2022. We hope to be able to go wild again then, as we have in the past.

Please note that none of the dates mentioned are officially confirmed yet. Would you like to be easily informed about your favorite gran fondos and other events? Super convenient and 100% free!

Amstel Gold Race, The Netherlands

15,000 amateur riders reported to Valkenburg for the biggest cycling event in the Netherlands. This time it wasn't the weekend of the professional race, but that didn't spoil the fun.

Next edition: 16 April 2022, one day before the pro race (not yet confirmed by the organization).

Liège-Bastogne-Liège Challenge, Belgium

Also good weather in the Ardennes where, as always, thousands of riders braved the official route of La Doyenne. Normally this sportive is held the day the pro race. The die hards who rode the longest distance kicked off 257 kilometers and 4986m+. But also the shorter distances are more than serious rides.

Next edition: 23 April 2022, one day before the pro race (not yet confirmed by the organization).

Gran Fondo Stelvio Santini, Italy

Great conditions also in the Italian Alps. As usual, the participants were first allowed to climb the Mortirolo from Tovo. This variant has sections up to 27% and, according to some, is more difficult than the traditional side from Mazzo. This is followed by the finish on top of the Stelvio. Normally the gran fondo takes place in the first weekend of June and you ride through the snow walls. These were missing today, but the kaiserwetter more than made up for that.

Next edition: 5 June 2022 (not yet confirmed by the organization).

Gran Fondo Stelvio Santini 2021

Gran Fondo Strade Bianche, Italy

The Gran Fondo Strade Bianche in Tuscany once again provided epic images. Again beautiful autumn weather, which made it dusty for the participants on the white roads. This event takes over an important part of the professional race that is normally held a day earlier. The podium was almost exclusively occupied by Italians this year, including a number of regular gran fondo riders. The exception was a nice third place for Belgium's Kathleen Luypaert in the gran fondo. All results.

Next edition: 6 March 2022, one day after the pro race (not yet confirmed by the organization).

Gran Fondo Strade Bianche 2021

Gran Fondo Vosges, France

This event has become very popular in a short time. That there were just over 800 participants at the start this year will have to do with corona. Last year the participants had to face a terrible weather, last weekend everyone enjoyed the sun and cloudless sky. The race counts as qualification for the UCI Gran Fondo World Series from 6-10 October in Sarajevo. Frederic Glorieux finished second this day and a host of other top Belgian riders finished in the top-10.

All results.

Next edition: 15 May 2022 (not yet confirmed by the organization).

Gran Fondo Vosges 2021

La Ventoux Sud, France

Special attention to this event around the bald mountain. Michiel Minnaert, the son of our editor Frank, finished second here. After a breakaway of 60 kilometers he was narrowly beaten in the sprint.

Next edition: September 11, 2022 (not yet confirmed by the organization).

Gran Fondo Milano-Sanremo, Italy

This is a very special gran fondo. It's the only cycling classic that also has a gran fondo that goes exactly over the full pro course. Although there is no prize-giving, we find this gran fondo worthy. Other classics have a sportive variant or a gran fondo that only follows part of the course.

Next edition: 5 June 2022 (not yet confirmed by the organization).
