Snow forces last-minute cancellation of the Alpen Challenge

It was inevitable: the severe weather in the Alps would impact the continuation of gran fondos. The biggest casualty: the Swiss gran fondo Alpen Challenge.

Snow on the Albula Pass forced a last-minute cancellation. This is not the first time the Alpen Challenge has faced issues due to external factors. In the past 7 years, it has occurred no less than 4 times.

Predominance

Once again, the organization was not to blame. Indeed, the decision to cancel was the only correct one. A thin layer of snow had made the Albula Pass completely impassable. It would have been both impossible and completely irresponsible to send more than 1,000 riders through that route.

Series of setbacks

As mentioned above, the Alpen Challenge has often struggled with (partial) cancellations. What makes it extra sad is that it was always due to force majeure.

  • In 2018, a stone avalanche disrupted the event. The long distance was cancelled.
  • In 2019, heavy rainfall caused a bridge to collapse. Once again, the long route was scrapped.
  • In 2021, it wasn't natural disasters but the Italian authorities who, due to corona restrictions, refused to give permission. Again, the long distance was cancelled.
