Discover the advantages of using an compressor for cycling

An increasing number of cyclists are recognizing the advantages of using an air compressor. If you've considered acquiring one, what key factors should you consider?

Understanding what a compressor is

A compressor is a device that compresses air and stores it at a pressure of around 8-10 bar, usually in a tank (more on this later). It can be connected to various types of equipment, with applications ranging from dental tools to car maintenance. For cycling enthusiasts, the primary uses include:

  1. The air gun: Ideal for cleaning and drying bikes, especially the drivetrain. Also useful for various household applications.
  2. A pistol for pumping and making tires tubeless. Additionally, it's handy for inflating items like swimming pools, air mattresses, and footballs.

Considerations when buying a compressor

  • Opt for an oil-free compressor to reduce maintenance and ensure the air output is oil-free.
  • Pay attention to noise production; quieter compressors (around 60 dB) may be slightly more expensive but are worth it, especially in residential areas.
  • Consider putting an insulated box around the compressor to minimize noise and prevent overheating.
  • Check the connection type; EURO (DIN) is the most common, but an adapter can be used if you have a compressor with an Orion connection.
  • Consider the size of the tank; a larger tank (24-50 liters) is recommended for less frequent refilling.
  • For limited space, there are compressors with an upright tank that can be placed in a corner easily.
  • Avoid compressors without a tank (portable compressors) as they may have insufficient air output for cycling needs.

Essential accessories

  • Most compressors come without a hose, so consider purchasing one separately. A reel is convenient but not strictly necessary.
  • A quality blow gun is essential, especially one with an attached pipe for reaching small corners.

  • Include a pump gun with a pressure gauge and a short, flexible hose. Ensure it fits both car valves (Schrader) and bicycle valves with the help of an adapter.

  • Consider purchasing a comprehensive air tool set) that includes various nozzles.

Did you know that CycloWorld also has an online shop
