Last weekend the organization of the Ötztaler Radmarathon announced the date of next edition: August 28, 2022.
This was not entirely without controversy, as the last edition caused major traffic problems at the Brenner Pass (Wipptal). Since the riders only pass through here and do not spend the night, the passage actually only causes inconvenience while there are hardly any benefits in return. A situation that occurs more often at major cycling events. But they agreed a solution and 28 August Europe's most prestigious cyclo can be held.
For participation in the Ötztaler a lottery applies. Registration for this is traditionally during the month of February. Make a note of it in your diary! The chance of getting one of the 4000 starting tickets is limited, as usually between 15000 and 20000 people register for the draw. You stand a better chance at a travel agency. The 2021 edition was a memorable one. At the last moment the route had to be changed due to an avalanche. This meant that the participants had to face the Kühtai from Haiming, which is a lot harder than the traditional variant from Oetz. In addition, hellish weather was predicted. Many people therefore decided not to take part in the race. Dutchman Johnny Hoogerland won in the men's race and German Christina Rausch won in the women's race. The infernal weather did come, but only at the end of the afternoon. A large number of riders crossed the line soaking wet and hypothermic. Read the report.
