One person calls it a cycling vacation, another a training camp: one thing is certain, riding in Mallorca is wonderful! I'm more of a Einzelgänger (loner); I like to head out alone. No need to wait for anyone, you do your own thing. After two training camps on the track, it seemed worth testing it on the road as well. The entire organization was handled by Bike Villas Travel and the Alaró Cycling Club.

The week’s program included approximately 600 km and 10,000 meters of elevation, spread over 6 days. Alaró is located about thirty kilometers from Palma airport. It’s a quiet village from where you can quickly find your way to excellent cycling roads, lots of elevation, and stunning views. Flat routes are also possible if you head east.
Wies and Ed, who founded Bike Villas Travel, make you feel at home with a warm welcome. This time, I didn’t want to travel with my own bike, so I sent my bike fitting details in advance. The rental bike was perfectly set up; I only had to adjust the pedal tension slightly. In advance, there was also a conversation with Lod, who guided us throughout the week on the bike and provided coaching via TrainingPeaks data.

The group consisted of a colorful mix of Dutch, Belgians, and a lost Irish beauty; at our peak, we had four strong-riding ladies and five tough men. It was nice to see how such a group bonded over the week. And if I ever needed a moment alone, I could break away briefly to enjoy the sound of the wind.
The weather gods were on our side. While (not too far away) in and around Valencia, the deluge was ruling, we were riding in 20-degree weather with a mild breeze. The competitive spirit in me made sure I took on every challenge. Think of standing climbs; 40-20 interval drills; trying to hold the wheel of the younger riders. After returning home and a day of rest, my Garmin told me my recovery time was still 45 hours... It’s great when you can push to the limit because everything around you is well taken care of: accommodation, food, bike, support. It will take some getting used to riding solo again.
