This summer presents a thrilling opportunity to ascend the enchanting Tourmalet, and along the way, tackle the Col d'Aspin. Mark your calendar for the GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet on June 23, 2024.
The route of this gran fondo is undeniably challenging. It starts in the iconic pilgrimage town of Lourdes, an experience in itself. The initial part of the course is comparatively easy, though not entirely flat, reminiscent of the terrain in the Ardennes. After 75 km, you face the eastern ascent of the Col d'Aspin (12 km, average gradient 6.6%, with stretches up to 10%). However, this is merely a warm-up for the main event: the eastern approach to the Tourmalet. This formidable climb spans 17 km, incorporating 1267 meters of ascent (average gradient 7.4%, peaking at 11%).
The Tourmalet, a staple of the Tour de France, is renowned for its frequency in the race. Tackling it from the east side, you'll navigate through the notorious tunnels (as seen in the photo), presenting their own set of challenges.
The route concludes with a breathtaking descent back to Lourdes, finishing with 157 km and 4064 meters of climbing under your belt. It's a test of endurance and skill, as evidenced by last year's event. Read our trip report here.
