When people think of New York, riding a gran fondo isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, since 2011, that’s exactly what’s been possible. The Gran Fondo New York (GFNY) debuted that year. Since 2015 the event is held as the GFNY World Championship NYC, a culmination of over 30 GFNY races around the world each year. In 2025 GFNY NYC will reach its 13th edition, now featuring a professional race as well.
Over the years GFNY NYC has gained a cult following, as it’s the only chance to ride a gran fondo in New York’s iconic surroundings. Looking for a unique cycling goal in 2025? Then GFNY NYC should be marked on your calendar—with a big, bright green marker!
When Uli and Lidia Fluhme founded GFNY in 2010, their vision was to unite cyclists from all over the world on beautiful and iconic courses under the motto “Be a Pro for a Day”. They wanted everyone to feel part of a professional cycling race, in a carefree and safe environment with all the trimmings. Fourteen years later, it’s safe to say they’ve more than succeeded.
GFNY’s distinctive bright green branding is now an inseparable part of the global gran fondo circuit. With over two hundred GFNY events held worldwide and more than 100,000 participants from 100+ countries, a global community has flourished. And the heart of that community will beat its hardest on May 18, 2025, during GFNY NYC, the organization’s flagship event. Here are five reasons to head to The Big Apple in 2025.
1. Unique start on George Washington Bridge
Few cycling events are held in the heart of a metropolis, let alone a gran fondo—and certainly not in New York. GFNY NYC has its start line on the George Washington Bridge, the world’s busiest bridge, where you'll watch the sunrise over Manhattan’s iconic skyline. A cycling experience like no other.
2. Ride alongside the pros on a challenging route
The “Be a Pro for a Day” motto steps up to the next level with the UCI 1.1 Gran Premio New York City, which starts 10 minutes before the gran fondo and follows the same course. Think you can keep up with the pros? Here’s your chance. The challenging 135 km route features 2,000 meters of elevation gain, with scenic views of the Hudson River and several Ardennes-like climbs. Save some energy for the final climb to Fort Lee, where the finish line awaits. Check out the course here.
3. International festival atmosphere
GFNY NYC is known for its international appeal, attracting five thousand participants from over 90 countries, particularly popular among the Latin American community. Here, it’s not just about the performance—it’s about the experience. The festival grounds are lively with music, a real American BBQ, pasta, and, of course, medals. Relish the post-race euphoria and enjoy an unforgettable event.
4. First-class professional organization
GFNY is celebrated for its professional organization. From start to finish, riders benefit from excellent guidance, clear signage, and top-notch support. GFNY NYC prioritizes safety with fully closed or police-secured roads, letting you focus solely on enjoying the ride.
5. Perfect combo with a city trip
With iconic landmarks like Times Square, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty, GFNY NYC offers the ideal blend of a cycling event and city adventure. Bring your partner or friends, extend your stay, and enjoy the best of New York—from epic rides to iconic sights.
In short, whether you’re drawn by the challenge, the atmosphere, or the unique blend of cycling and city life, the GFNY World Championship NYC on May 18, 2025, has it all for the gran fondo enthusiast. New York awaits—are you ready?
