The course

The Tour des Stations has several distances. The ultra fondo is very special: 242 km/8848m+. This is everesting in gran fondo form. A bizarre challenge, but for lovers of long, tough events a must-do for the bucket list.

The Marmotte Granfondo Valais is the name of the gran fondo. It is a true Marmotte that may bear the name with honor. 4700 meters of climbing in 133 kilometers, it goes up and down non-stop. There are hardly any flat sections and therefore it is a beast of a gran fondo.

Even the medio fondo has 2850m+ in only 74 kilometers. Those who find the ultra fondo and the gran fondo just a bit too much of a good thing can get their fair share.

Read through the report from 2021 and get inspired.

Alle the routes run through the Swiss region of Valais and follow several ski stations. Between the four-thousanders, it is among the most beautiful cycling areas in Switzerland. All distances finish uphill and that's what makes a gran fondo just that little bit more special. At the top of the finish line, a fabulous view of the Grand Combin (4314m) with its glaciers and eternal snow unfolds. One of the highest peaks in the Alps.

The most notable climbs are:

  • Col du Lein. Opening climb of all courses. The last kilometer is unpaved, but doable.
  • Ovronnaz. Very difficult climb. Is only in the ultra fondo.
  • Col de Crans-Montana. Wonderful climb. CycloWorld has done it recently. Is only in the ultra fondo.
  • Thyon 2000. Long and tricky climb that starts with the extremely steep Mur de Hérémence. It's in the ultra fondo and gran fondo.
  • Col de la Croix de Coeur. Absolute stunner (in all courses) on a small road. Even a gravel section at the beginning.
