How to publish a ride on Strava you didn't record

You're out riding and your bike computer refuses or you forgot to take it with you. You either didn't have your phone with you or you didn't use it to log your ride. When you get home, you'd like to put the ride on Strava anyway, because if it ain't on Strava, it didn't happen. We explain how.

How does it work?

  1. Draw the ride in your favorite route planner and download the ride as GPX or TCX.
  2. You can't upload this GPX to Strava yet, because the file doesn't contain timestamps. Strava will therefore give an error message. Therefore, first run it through this tool.
  3. Set the start time manually. Set the average speed. Note, set this low, otherwise all your PRs/KOMs will be "polluted".
  4. In hilly terrain check "Use Elevation in Calculating Speed". This will lower your speed uphill.
  5. In the next screen you can even set the type of bike computer.
  6. Download as GPX
  7. Upload manually to Strava via the plus sign in the upper right > upload activity (note, this only works from a computer, not through the app).

Alternative

If you find this too much hassle there is another way. The downside is that you won't have a "map" of your ride.

  1. Open Strava on a computer or laptop
  2. Click the plus sign > manual input
  3. Fill in the data and hit save
