Short news: GF Marco Pantani, Schleck, crash Hoogerland

This week, too, there is some news from the world of gran fondos, sportives, stage races and other cycling events.

  • This year there will not be a Gran Fondo Marco Pantani. This sympathetic gran fonds is in annually organised  the east coast of Italy, just north of Rimini. The reason: The 50th anniversary edition of the Nove Colli was moved to the same date by COVID and therefore experienced too much competition. Next year another chance.

  • The date of the Erzgebirgstour 2022 known: July 8-10. There are 4 stages in 2022, including a prologue. The total distance is 202 km / 4100m+. This race was able to be organized even in the corona era, which says a lot about the quality of the organization. And it's not much further away than the Vosges, so for a lot of Europeans this is definitely a must. Actually, the event is similar to our beloved Riderman. And for that reason, this event definitely deserves more attention.

  • Gravel racing is becoming more popular and fortunately the UCI sees that too. On Wednesday the international cycling union announced that as of 2022 there will be its own world championship and also a UCI Gravel World Series: races in which riders can qualify for the World Gravel Championship. Not much is known yet, but we'll keep you updated.

  • Vincenzo Pisani was caught using doping during an out-of-competition check earlier this season. Although the result of the contra-expertise is not yet known, he has already been removed from the results of the Maratona dles Dolomites. Frederic Glorieux thus wins 1st place in his category, congratulations!
  • Speaking of Glorieux, he nicely the time trial in the Giro Sardegna. Damiano Lenzi (IT) got the overall victory. All results can be found here. Fun fact: next year CycloWorld will once again be raffling off a free starting ticket.

  • This weekend there is one more chance to qualify for the UCI World Cup Gran Fondo in Sarajevo and that is during the Schleck Granfondo in Luxembourg. Unfortunately, this event has been fully booked for ages. By the way, CycloWorld will have a great team at the start in Luxembourg, consisting of Marcel van Herten, Marcel Klapwijk, Ralph Ornelis and Peter Koens. The one rider we can't expect to see at the start in Sarajevo, unfortunately, is top favorite Johnny Hoogerland. He crashed hard during a training session, he reports Strava. It must have been a hard fall, according to Strava he was riding 80 km/h at the time. Johnny, all the best on behalf of the entire CycloWorld team.
