The "Race Around" concept has been a staple in ultra cycling for ages. The idea is simple: a race as close to national borders as possible, where the clock stops only at the finish line. The Race Around Austria is one of the coolest versions you can ride.
The Race Around Austria features three different formats. Whether you are a novice ultra cyclist or an experienced rider, you'll find a challenge that suits you. Let's introduce the three formats.
Format 1: Race Around Austria
In the classic version, you ride 2,200 kilometers with about 30,000 meters of elevation. The start (from St. Georgen im Attergau, not far from Salzburg) is on August 12, and you have until August 18 to finish. You will be accompanied by your own support car along the way. The route takes you past beautiful towns like Bludenz and Lienz, and over Austria's most scenic mountain passes, with the Grossglockner serving as the literal and metaphorical pinnacle. The Silvretta High Alpine Road and the Gerlos Pass are also noteworthy. You can ride this challenge solo, or as a team of 2 or 4 riders (m/f or mixed).
Format 2: Race Around Austria 1500
This slightly less strenuous version is perfect for less experienced climbers. With fewer kilometers and most mountain passes, including the Grossglockner, eliminated, this format can only be ridden solo.
Format 3: CHALLENGE
Interested in stepping up to ultra cycling, but find 1500 or 2200 kilometers too daunting? The CHALLENGE is the perfect introduction to this extreme form of cycling. It is a 24-hour race covering 560 kilometers and 6500 meters of elevation. You ride for 24 hours on the course. There are two categories: solo or as a relay team of two. For purists, there's also an unsupported solo category where you handle everything yourself.
The organizers rightly call this event Austria's most emotional bike race. Covering more than 2,200 kilometers along Austria's scenic but demanding borders, cyclists face steep mountain passes, treacherous weather, and long hours of solitude. This requires extraordinary endurance and perseverance, often leading to emotional moments of triumph and despair. The riders' personal stories, their struggles against the elements, and the close relationships with their support teams contribute to the deep emotional impact of this unique race.
