The UCI Gran Fondo World Cup is booming. In recent years, the UCI Gran Fondo World Series has become increasingly professionalized and globalized and has become an annual gran fondo highlight. With the Gran Fondo Isle of Man, the qualifying series of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series came to a close at the end of July and the last places for the World Cup were given away. The Danes were early to announce the program and the route. That gave us the opportunity back in December to do a first preview on the program, the qualifying circuit and the route. Even then, it became clear that the route would be anything but easy. With start and finish in downtown Aalborg, the first and last 8 kilometers are much like a city criterium. After turning left after 10 kilometers, the route follows mostly narrow country roads through open meadows and forests. Although Denmark has no real mountains, the route is anything but flat. An incessant stream of short climb meters of about 3 to 5%, with outliers to 8%, totals up to about 1,400 meters of elevation. In particular, the succession of short calf bites, technical descents and narrow country roads are definitely going to be felt as the kilometers increase. Not to mention the ever-present wind.
