Sunny Neusiedler See Radmarathon attracts 40% more participants

Daniela Traxl - Pintarelli (AT) and Adam Foltan (SI) are the winners of the increasingly popular UCI qualifier Neusiedler See Radmarathon. In beautiful weather conditions, some 1,200 riders (m/f) reached the finish line on Sunday.

Time trial on Saturday

On Saturday it was time for the optional time trial of 26 km and 200 meters of elevation. The weather conditions were not an issue as the sun was shining brightly. Hungarian Daniel Szalay took the win in the men's event. Austrian Anna Koffler took first place in the women's category. Both were competing in the time trial bike category. It was also possible to start on a regular road bike. So did our editors Wouter Fioole and Ralph Ornelis, who finished 23rd and 51st respectively. In the mixed pairs, Johnny Hoogerland and his wife Gerda scored a deserving second place. All the results can be found here.

Sun again at the gran fondo

On Sunday it was time for the gran fondo. The fast 126 km course with 600 meters of elevation caused a lot of nervousness in the peloton, resulting in some crashes. Hoogerland, among others, but also our own Ralph crashed. Both without too much damage. Hoogerland: 'Everyone here is riding on their limit, many participants have poor handling skills. This is the result.' Despite his fall, the Zeeuw still managed to finish 37th. Ralph also managed to finish the race.

The organization was not to blame for crashes, said Ornelis: 'There was a lot of police escort and clear signalmen.'

Wouter Fioole was also in the race. With a creditable 167th place (28th in category) he secured his World Cup qualification. 'The organization was really good. The road surface in Hungary was really bad for 40 km. But even that was very well worked out in the briefing, including pictures of the dangerous points. A very nice detail was the video wall in the finisher's tent, on which you could follow the race.'

Record number of participants

A total of 1475 riders registered, almost 40% more than last year. So popularity is on the rise. Of those, 228 riders did not start and 58 did not finish. The results of the road race can be found here.
